- What is emotional intelligence (EQ)? A definition
Emotional intelligence (EQ)
can be defined as; to be aware of, understand and manage our emotions so they work best for us. Emotions are our most significant feedback mechanism. Tapping into emotions therefore gives us essential information about what’s important to us, our environment and our relationships. Emotions can be hidden drivers for us. They can be untamed manipulators that aren't helpful. Unchecked emotions can build unhelpful beliefs that can run our lives without us even realising. Knowing, accepting and then using your emotions to facilitate your life means you're really in charge of yourself and this is good EQ.The Advanced Relationship Test ('A.R.T.') is an emotional intelligence tool that allows you to get in touch with how you approach your relationships.
Why is the A.R.T. different? Because unlike most other tests your A.R.T results are handwritten just for you - not automated. The results are more tailored and personal and your coaching is carried out by the person who actually wrote the feedback on your results.- What isn't emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is not
simply about 'being emotional' or indeed subduing emotions or allowing our emotions to rule us. Quite the contrary, it’s about having full awareness of our emotions and managing them well in the moment. People who are more aware of, keep cool and can actually 'use', their emotions positively, particularly in challenging situations, make better decisions that 'work' better for them.- Did Daniel Goleman create Emotional intelligence?
- A brief history of EQ: Daniel Goleman publicised EQ through his best selling book 'Emotional Intelligence - Why it can matter more than IQ' in 1995; but it was Peter Salovey and John Mayer who defined EQ in 1990 and others had discussed related skills and intelligences before then. There are two main variants of EQ models( trait and ability) noted since 2000; Notable general EQ tests are the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCIET) of EQ ability, the EQ-i 2.0 (previously BarOn EQ-i) measuring trait EQ and Daniel Golemans's mixed EQ model tested by the ECi. Emotional intelligence is broadly a set of all round competencies and practical skills that cover both personal and relationship (social) aspects. The Advanced Relationship Test (A.R.T.) is a mixed trait test of social-emotional intelligence and one of a kind.
- Personal emotional Intelligence
- A personal emotional intelligence definition; These are self-empowerment skills including; self-understanding and emotional management whereby someone believes in, respects and can motivate themselves. Personal EQ is about self-knowledge and allows us to make clearer decisions and cope well under pressure as we know about and take more care about ourselves. The net result is greater personal achievement, fulfilment and well-being.
- Social emotional intelligence (SEQ)
- Social emotional intelligence can be defined as; the ability to build strong rewarding relationships and well-honed communication skills. The Advanced Relationship Test is a unique tool that identifies and builds strong interpersonal relationship skills. Personal & social intelligences are inter-related. For instance those people who know and respect themselves more find it easier to get to know and respect others. At the root of all relationships - and particularly the relationship with yourself - is the concept and practice of 'empathy'. That's why empathy takes such a prominent role in the Advanced Relationship Test.
- What is empathy? A definition
What is Empathy?
Empathy is at the core of social emotional intelligence. It can be defined as having broadly two parts: The capacity to recognize and understand the feelings or situation of another and importantly show the willingness and ability to be compassionate. It is often confused with sympathy, which is quite different. Sympathy is the action of showing we care when someone is having a difficult time. Empathy is therefore a wider and more neutral set of skills. It’s good to empathize with someone when things are going well too. A significant part of EQ relates to building and maintaining effective relationships. Empathy is at the core of relationship-building. The A.R.T. model is a useful model to understand these key components. Read more about the Advanced Relationship Test below.- EQ Tests. Why the Advanced Relationship Test (A.R.T.)?
The Advanced Relationship Test Model
Not all EQ tests are the same. They vary in what elements they test – both personal and social. Most EQ tests try and test both at the same time, which is fine for an overview of EQ but less useful if you want detailed specific feedback on your relationship strengths and development areas. The EQ-i, MSCEIT and ECI are all well-respected and widely used EQ tests that measure overall emotional intelligence. However for more granular information about social intelligence we designed a test that focuses just on relationships. So whilst the EQ-i asks just a handful of questions relating to relationships, the A.R.T. reveals a complete spectrum of relationship sub-aspects that can be assessed and built to work better for you. The aspects of the A.R.T model we use work because they’re easy to understand and build upon.Relationship management skills
All relationships require similar qualities. So when you build your interpersonal management skills your friendship, parenting, partner skills will be brought into focus too and may well also improve. EQ coaching shows people how the A.R.T. relationship aspects relate to their specific relationship issues and scenarios - what matters to them. This emotional intelligence training is totally goal-oriented and based firmly on their needs. Europe wide coaching and testing also available. coaching.arenacampus.nl
